The 2018 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year will be announced Friday, April 20, during a luncheon at The Umstead Hotel, 100 Woodland Pond Drive, Cary. The winner succeeds the 2017 Teacher of the Year, Lisa Godwin, a kindergarten teacher at Dixon Elementary School in Onslow County.

MetLife has entered a new multi-year agreement with MIT Media Lab, joining the university program as a consortium member, in efforts to accelerate the use of emerging technologies throughout its core business. The insurer will leverage MIT Media Lab's research in the areas of the Internet of Things, data science and machine learning to improve the life insurance underwriting process, it says.

Steven Pladl's mother called police in North Carolina to say she'd had a disturbing call from him and to ask officers to check on the well-being of her infant grandson, who was also her great grandson.

A rollover accident involving eight vehicles may have been caused by features in a rental vehicle from Johnson Lexus in Raleigh, according to Boone Police Danny Houck. Personnel from Boone Police, Boone Fire, Watauga Medics, Watauga Rescue and the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation responded to the 4:11 p.m. call of a rollover accident at the intersection of U.S. 421 and N.C. 194.

A third state agency is now pursuing an investigation of staff conduct and safety standards at Baby+Co., the natural birthing center in Cary where four newborns have died since the facility opened 3 1/2 years ago. Raleigh pediatrician Mary-Cassie Shaw said a senior investigator from the N.C. Medical Board called her last week to discuss Baby+Co., and followed up by email this week with additional questions.

The News and Observer) - There are so few nurses in North Carolina's public schools that a new state report says it could cost an additional $45 million to $79 million a year to help meet student health needs. There's one school nurse for every 1,086 students, according to a state legislative staff report , meaning the majority of student medical needs have to be met by non-nurses.
