R&R Grill stands for Rob and Ross – the father and son duo who own the restaurant. During Ross’ time as a student at UNC, Rob grew to love the area, eventually relocating here. Rob formerly owned a restaurant at the NC shore, and Ross worked in it since age 11. The duo observed take out chains and fast food beginning to outnumber locally owned businesses on Franklin Street. Distraught, they wanted to prevent yet another big box restaurant from opening up and to bring something that was missing to East Franklin Street – casual American dining at the highest level. They completely renovated the space, taking out everything from the floor to the rafters, and developed a menu that featured local ingredients, with everything from the dressings to the burgers made in house. They worked with bar manager Matt Elia to develop a unique draft and wine selection, as well as a cocktail list consisting of modern takes on classic cocktails, many made with fresh fruit and spices.
